What You Will Learn
Explain why lifting operations are high-risk for the people standing near them, not only for the crane crew
Recognise the danger areas around a lift, the drop zone under the load, the load path, the slew and counterweight zone, and the crane's set-up area, and explain what an exclusion zone is, who sets it, and why you never enter or cross one
Identify who is in charge of a lift, the licensed crane operator, dogger and rigger working to a lift plan, and explain why you must never sling a load or direct a crane, and where warning of danger differs from directing a lift
Recognise the warning signs of an unsafe lift, including ground, outrigger, powerline and weather problems, and know that your role is to get clear and raise it, not to fix it
Get yourself to safety and report a hazard, near miss or incident to the right person

Written for people who are near lifting work, not for people who carry it out. This course is not for doggers, riggers or crane operators, whose competence comes from licensed training.
Accreditation: This is a non-accredited awareness course only. It is not a nationally recognised qualification, not an RTO Statement of Attainment and not a high risk work licence. It does not authorise you to sling a load, select or inspect lifting gear, direct or signal a crane or hoist operator, carry out rigging work or operate a crane of any kind. Dogging, rigging and every crane class are high risk work under Schedule 3 of the model Work Health and Safety Regulations and every one of them is licensed work: a licence comes from training with a Registered Training Organisation and being assessed by an accredited assessor. The classes overlap in one direction only, Schedule 3 puts dogging work inside the basic rigging class, so a rigging licence encompasses dogging work. Nothing encompasses an awareness course, and this one does not replace, shorten or count towards any licence. It also does not replace your site induction, the site's lift plan or safe work method statement or the directions of the crane crew and site supervisor, which always decide what you may and may not do on a particular site. If your role requires you to take any part in a lift, speak to your employer or your work health and safety regulator, not to this course.
