- Use active listening and clear, respectful communication to reduce tension
- Apply practical de-escalation techniques when emotions are running high
- Work through a structured, step-by-step approach to resolve a dispute
- Recognise when a conflict must be escalated and the pathways available, including where behaviour may be bullying, harassment or discrimination
Course Content
- Conflict at work is normal: how you handle it is what counts
- By the end of this course, you'll be able to:
- Conflict is a natural part of working with other people
- Most workplace conflict grows from a handful of common sources
- Catch conflict while it is still about the task, not the person
- Early warning signs give you a chance to act before things escalate
- Left unmanaged, conflict spreads well beyond the two people involved
- Poor communication turns small differences into real conflict
- Active listening is a skill you can practise in five moves
- How you say it changes how it lands: 'I' statements beat 'you' statements
- Common habits quietly block real listening
- Your tone and body language speak louder than your words
- When emotions spike, calm the situation before you try to solve it
- De-escalation techniques that lower the temperature
- In a heated moment, small choices either escalate or de-escalate
- Manage your own reaction first. It is the only side you control
- Know when to pause: some conversations should not continue right now
- A calm, structured conversation resolves more than avoidance or force
- Work through conflict in a clear sequence
- Look beneath 'positions' to the 'interests' underneath
- Attack the problem together, not each other
- Write down what you agreed, and actually follow up
- Some conflicts need more than the two of you to resolve safely
- These signs mean it is time to escalate, not keep going alone
- Bullying, harassment and discrimination are not just 'conflict'. They are legal matters
- Employers must manage conflict as a health and safety risk
- Know the pathways available to you
- Support and confidentiality matter, for everyone involved
- Now put it together on a real team problem
- Tension between two team members
- The five things to carry away
