Awareness Certificate vs Statement of Attainment vs White Card: Which Do You Actually Need?
Plain comparison of a WorkProof awareness certificate, an RTO Statement of Attainment and a White Card (CPCWHS1001): when each fits, and when it does not.
Published 2026-10-04
Three different pieces of paper get called “a WHS certificate” in Australian workplaces. They are not the same thing. Mixing them up wastes money and can leave you without what you were asked for.
This guide sets out plainly which is which. WorkProof sells non-accredited awareness training. We are not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). If what you need is a Statement of Attainment or a White Card, buy those from an RTO, not from us.
Try a sample WorkProof certificate first: verify WP-SAMPLE-0001.
The Plain Table
| Awareness Certificate (e.g. WorkProof) | Statement of Attainment (SoA) | White Card (CPCWHS1001) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What It Is | Certificate of completion for awareness / professional development training | Formal VET outcome for a unit of competency under the AQF | Evidence you completed general construction induction |
| Who Can Issue It | Any training provider (including non-RTOs) | A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) only | An approved RTO pathway; card rules vary by state/territory |
| Nationally Recognised? | No | Yes (for that unit) | Yes. Required before carrying out construction work |
| Typical Ask | “Show me awareness / induction evidence with a name and a date” | “Provide the unit of competency / SoA for [code]” | “Have a current White Card before you start on site” |
| Assessment Style | Awareness quiz / knowledge check | Competency assessment (often includes practical) | RTO assessment for CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry |
| Verification | WorkProof: public ID check at /verify, no account | RTO / USI pathways | State White Card / regulator systems |
| Does WorkProof Supply It? | Yes. Certificate of completion with verify ID | No | No |

When to Use Each
When an Awareness Certificate Fits
- A head contractor, client, prequalification portal or auditor asked for evidence of awareness training on a topic (manual handling, WHS fundamentals, chemicals, psychosocial risk, and so on)
- You need a dated record per person you can show in seconds
- The ask is not a named unit code, licence or White Card
- You still run your own site-specific induction. Awareness courses sit beside that duty. They do not replace it
WorkProof fit: short online courses (most cost between $39 and $59 including GST and take an hour or less), with a certificate ID anyone can check. Examples:
- Introduction to Work Health and Safety in Australia: about 75 minutes, $49 including GST
- Hazardous Manual Tasks and Manual Handling Safety: about 45 minutes, $39 including GST

When a Statement of Attainment Fits
- The request names a unit of competency (for example HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely, or first aid units such as HLTAID011)
- A contract, award or regulator pathway requires nationally recognised training
- Assessment must demonstrate competency, not just awareness
WorkProof fit: none. Go to an RTO.
When a White Card Fits
- The person will carry out construction work and needs general construction induction (unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry)
- Every Australian state and territory requires this before that work starts, and it is delivered through an approved RTO pathway
WorkProof fit: none. A WorkProof construction awareness course for site visitors or office staff is not a White Card. See accreditation.
Also Not WorkProof (Use the Correct Pathway)
- High-risk work licences (forklift, scaffolding, dogging, rigging, certain EWPs, and so on)
- Licensed asbestos removal / demolition classes
- Certified first aid where your needs assessment requires it
- Regulator-approved HSR training
Always check your local WHS regulator before relying on any training for a legal requirement.
How WorkProof Fits (and Where It Stops)
WorkProof is built for the common middle case: awareness training you can evidence, with a public verification ID. Whether training is suitable and adequate for a particular worker depends on the work, the risks and the controls at that workplace, and that judgement stays with the PCBU (person conducting a business or undertaking).
- Issued by Creative Directions Management Consulting Pty Ltd (ABN 78 655 132 166), trading as WorkProof, and not a Registered Training Organisation
- Written by Kam Askari, Managing Director of Creative Directions Management Consulting Group, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 Lead Auditor. MBA, Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, MAICD.
- Each course page lists the law / guidance sources and the law check dates
- Employers buy seats at workproof.com.au/business: pay by card, tax invoice on the account, no platform fee
A certificate shows that a named person completed a course. It does not discharge the duty of a PCBU by itself. It does not replace site induction, licences or accredited units. Whether a particular head contractor accepts a WorkProof certificate is their call, so send the sample verify link first.
Quick Decision Tree
- Did they name CPCWHS1001 / White Card? → RTO White Card pathway.
- Did they name a unit code or ask for a Statement of Attainment? → RTO.
- Did they ask for a licence or ticket? → Approved pathway for that licence.
- Did they ask for awareness / induction evidence with a record? → A WorkProof certificate may fit. Confirm with them using the sample verify link, then buy seats.
