Hazardous Manual Tasks and Manual Handling Safety

Body stressing is the largest single cause of serious workers' compensation claims in Australia: 50,600 claims, or 34.5%, in 2023-24, according to Safe Work Australia's Key Work Health and Safety Statistics Australia 2025. This gives every worker the same 45 minutes on what makes a task hazardous and what actually prevents it.
What You Will Learn
- Define a hazardous manual task and identify the characteristics that make manual tasks hazardous under the WHS Regulations
- Describe common musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and how they develop through both gradual wear and sudden overload
- Recognise the risk factors of force, posture, movement, repetition, duration, vibration and work environment in everyday tasks
- Explain safe lifting principles and, critically, why technique training alone is not an effective control
- Apply the hierarchy of controls to manual tasks, prioritising job redesign and mechanical aids over behaviour-based controls
Course Content
- The injuries you can't see coming, and how to stop them
- By the end of this course, you'll be able to:
- Almost every job involves manual tasks: the law targets the risky ones
- The law defines a hazardous manual task by its characteristics, not its weight
- It's not the weight alone: how you handle a load matters more than its mass
- Body stressing is Australia's single largest cause of serious injury claims
- The definition and duties where you work
- A musculoskeletal disorder is the harm that hazardous manual tasks cause
- Manual tasks produce a recognisable family of injuries
- Bodies get hurt two ways, and the gradual one causes most injuries
- Make the work safe for real workers, not a hypothetical ideal one
- Time pressure and poor support turn physical strain into lasting injury
- The risk factors you look for: force, posture and movement, and how long the task lasts and whether it vibrates
- Force is the muscular effort a task demands, and sudden force is the worst
- Awkward and sustained postures overload joints even without heavy loads
- Duration and vibration decide how far a risk factor is pushed
- Risk factors come from sources you can change, look beyond the worker
- Good technique helps, but on its own it does not prevent injuries
- Before you lift, plan the whole task, not just the pick-up
- During the lift, the safe way protects your spine, the unsafe way loads it
- Team lifts and people handling need coordination, not just extra hands
- Technique can't change the task, which is why it sits low in the hierarchy
- Work down the hierarchy: the strongest results come from changing the work
- The most reliable controls remove or shrink the handling itself
- Mechanical aids and workplace redesign take the load off the body
- Administrative controls support the redesign. They don't replace it
- Consult the people who do the task, then trial and review the controls
- Now put it all together on a real shift
- On the dock: a peak-season shift
- The five things to carry away
