ISO 19011 Guidelines for Auditing Management Systems Awareness
Internal audit is where a management system either proves itself or quietly stops being true. This course covers what an internal audit is and is not, the principles that make an audit trustworthy, how an audit programme is planned and run, the audit itself from initiation through to follow up and the 2018 guidance on virtual audits in Annex A. It is written to AS/NZS ISO 19011:2019, which adopts ISO 19011:2018. ISO published a fourth edition, ISO 19011:2026, in May 2026; this course is written to the AS/NZS adoption of the 2018 edition and says where the 2026 edition differs. Written for people asked to audit, to be audited or to run the programme.
What You Will Learn
- Explain what an internal audit is, how it differs from a certification audit and what it is not for
- Describe the principles of auditing and why independence and evidence matter to a finding
- Explain how an audit programme is planned, resourced and judged on risk
- Describe the stages of an audit from initiation through reporting to follow up
- Distinguish conformity, nonconformity and an opportunity for improvement, and what each triggers
- Recognise that the 2018 edition includes virtual audits in Annex A, and that some evidence still needs someone on site
